About DownInfo

A free checker that tells you whether a website is down for everyone or only for you, and which step broke. Run by a small web company in Florida, for the people who call that company when their site stops working.

Who

DownInfo is run by Javier Carnicer under Web Landscapes LLC, a Florida company that builds and hosts websites for small businesses. The phone number on this site rings in that office. Call or text (786) 372-0287, or email contact@downinfo.com.

Why

"My website is down" is the most common call a web company gets, and about half the time the website is fine: it's the caller's Wi-Fi, a stale copy in the browser, or the office firewall. The other half, the fix depends on which step failed, and the caller can't tell a DNS problem from an expired certificate from a crashed server. So we built the tool we wanted to send people to: a check from outside, in plain words, with the first red step and who to call.

What exists today

  • The checker: domain name, server, certificate, page, in that order, from a Cloudflare data center, with advice for a visitor and for the owner, and a result link you can send to whoever fixes it.
  • The live board: twenty popular services, asked once a minute, with the time and the place of each check.
  • The guides: what to do when your site is down, how to tell if it's you, DNS and certificate errors explained.

What's being built

Monitoring and status pages for small businesses: the same checks run every minute for your site, with a text and an email when it fails. It's in development. Early access is open: tell us your sites and we'll send a quote. Nobody is charged until it runs on their site.

How to read the results

  • The checker asks from one data center at a time. It's one view from outside your network, not proof that a site is up everywhere in the world.
  • The board checks home pages. A service can be green here while its app or your account is broken.
  • The monitoring, when it ships, is automatic: checks every minute and an alert that says what broke.
  • The sites you check aren't stored in a database. Results are cached for 60 seconds so a popular check isn't repeated; your history stays in your browser. The privacy page says exactly what is logged.
